Washing dishes - that never changed.  Parallel worlds, alternative worlds: dozens and dozens of them.  Alexander Hergensheimer, All-American, Small Town, Born Again Believer, was dazed.   Someone Up There - or Someone Down There - ckearly had it in for him.  Some celestial or infernal ping-pong player just jept casually swatting him from world to world.  No sooner beginning to settle, than, wham! there he was, somewhere else, struggling all over again.  Three things only were constant:  Margrethe, the illicit love of all his lives; an old safety razor - and the fact that the only job in town was always washing dishes.
