Robert Goodman was born in Taplow, England in 1871, and his family moved to South Africa in 1886. In early 1900, Goodman returned to South Africa to travel the country, and although not an official war artist, he made sketches of the Anglo-Boer War battle fronts. It was on this particular trip to South Africa that Goodman took on the name Gwelo. The Rhodesian town of Gwelo had been founded in 1895, the same year that Goodman had launched his own art career, and so he chose that name to add to his own, from then on signing his work R. Gwelo Goodman or R.G.G..
