Robert Rauschenberg was a pioneering American artist known for his innovative Combines series, which blurred the lines between painting and sculpture. Born Milton Ernest Rauschenberg on October 22, 1925, in Port Arthur, Texas, he later changed his name to Robert.

Rauschenberg's artistic journey began with studying pharmacology at the University of Texas, but he dropped out and joined the United States Navy, where he served as a neuropsychiatric technician. After his discharge, he pursued art, studying at the Kansas City Art Institute, Académie Julian in Paris, and Black Mountain College in North Carolina.

His early works, including the White Paintings (1951) and Black Paintings (1951-1953), showcased his experimentation with monochromatic colors and textures. However, it was his Combines series (1954-1964) that catapulted him to fame, incorporating everyday objects like tires, cardboard boxes, and even a stuffed goat .

Rauschenberg's collaborations with other artists, including Jasper Johns and Merce Cunningham, further solidified his reputation as a visionary artist. He also explored performance art, choreographing pieces like Pelican (1963) and designing sets and costumes for various dance companies .

Throughout his career, Rauschenberg received numerous awards, including the International Grand Prize in Painting at the 32nd Venice Biennale in 1964 and the National Medal of Arts in 1993. He continued to innovate and experiment with new materials and techniques until his passing on May 12, 2008 .
