Following the phenomenal success of last year's US tour, Roger Waters is taking his epic new production of the seminal The Wall concert on the road in Europe this year from 21st March to 7th July.

Looking back at what went on in Berlin, there are so many moments to savour. The special guests that Waters gathered together were remarkably appropriate, and some were truly bizarre: Guitarist Rick DiFonzo's look of sustained anger as Cyndi Lauper gyrates around him during the extended workout of Another Brick In The Wall, Part II, before Thomas Dolby marches on and camps up the show beyond belief. The Band, looking stately and displaced, bring grit and authenticity to the proceedings. Van Morrison adds warmth to the haughty grandeur of Comfortably Numb. Waters, a mixture of terror, incredulity and authority written on his face as he presides over his show.

All the gimmicks and showstoppers are there: The heads, necks and arms of inflatables scaled up for the ginormous crowd; Back-up films directed by Ian Emes, starring Marianne Faithfull and Rupert Everett as Pink. All Scarfe's grotesques were represented in animation or in film. The frightened ones, the hammers, the teacher, the mother and the wife, and of course, the fucking flowers'. A roadway built at front of the stage to take cars and tanks. Two tower cranes to build the set. The mock fascistic overtones. A Soviet band playing on the space where Hitler committed suicide with projections of the names of the war dead on the wall itself. Q Magazine called the show an overwhelming piece of mega-theatre," and they were not wrong.

Waters is taking The Wall around the world again, grappling with issues the sizes and magnitude of Afghanistan and Palestine woven into the narrative of his psychodrama. The album's place in the firmament is guaranteed. There is a lot of commercial clutter on the net, and a lot of propaganda, but I have a sense that just beneath the surface understanding is gaining ground," Waters said. We just have to keep blogging, keep twittering, keep communicating, keep sharing ideas."
