Bertie Reed has become a legend not only in his own country but also in sailing circles around the world. His friend and confidant Roger Williams unfolds the legend in full from his humble beginnings in Port Elizabeth, and through his naval career of 22 years. Reed's remarkable climb to the top in ocean racing, to point where he is regarded as one of the world's foremost singlehanded sailors." Reed represented South Africa in numerous ocean races including the '82/83 BOC Challenge, in which he astounded the yachting world by sailing the then 14-year-old Voortrekker into Newport, Rhode Island, to take second place in the arduous single-handed circumnavigation challenge. Reed and Martin have sailed together in a number of races, including the two-handed Round Britain Race in 1982 on 'Trekker II, winning in record time. In the 1990/91 BOC single-handed race, Reed's seamanship made world headlines when he rescued fellow competitor Martin from icy seas after Martin's boat Allied Bank was holed by an iceberg near Cape Horn. The pair last sailed together in 1992 when they co-skippered Grinaker in a race across the Atlantic, the BOC Trans Atlantic Challenge, which Grinaker won.
