Roman Bronze AE3 of Emperor Valentinian I (364-375 A.D.)

Valentinian I was proclaimed emperor shortly after the death of Jovian in 364 A.D. Taking command of the Western provinces, Valentinian spent most of his reign combating barbarian invasions along the Rhine frontier.

The obverse shows the emperor’s pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust facing to the right with the words D N VALENTINI_ANVS P F AVG.

The reverse shows the deity Securitas with the words SECVRITAS-REIPVBLICAE.

Weight 2 grams and 17 mm in diameter.
