MIDDLE BYZANTINE PERIOD:  3th - 5th CENTURY AD

  It is a Late Roman bronze cross from the Roman Period

and features a very high relief  

Material: Bronze

Size: 54mm-36mm 

Weight: 16.3 Gr.

Condition: Extremely Fine

The Greek inscription:

'Helios Demitrios' (Sun Patriarch)

'WHY A GREEK INSCRIPTION ON A ROMAN CROSS???'

Background: The three languages used during this early Christian period:

Latin was the official language of the Roman Empire; it represented human government, power, and conquest.

Greek was the international language of culture; it represented human wisdom, art, and commerce  and

Hebrew was the religious language of the Jews.

All three these languages were also used

on the inscription the Romans made on Jesus' cross:

From top to bottom: Latin, GREEK and Hebrew
