Severous Alexander 222 - 235
Deposed his cousin Elagabalus in 222 with assistance of Julia Maesia.
His reign was marked by campaigns against the Germans and the Parthians. Carried out restoration of Roman landmarks such as the colosseum and the Nymphaceum. He banished his wife Orbiana after two turbulent years.
Alexander and his mother Julia Marnaea were murdered by mutinous troops in 235 while on a military expedition against the Germans. This resulted in the proclaimation of General Maximius as Emperor and ushered in a stormy era of military Emperors leading to the revolts of 238.
A nice heavy Roman bronze, approximately 32mm diameter and 3mm thickness. Reverse has more wear.
Good portrait, lots of character and steeped in history.
