Roman SILVER Antoninianus of Philp I (244-249 A.D)

Struck in silver. Weight 3.3 grams and diameter 22 mm. Rome mint, 244 - 249 A.D.

Obverse: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, from behind;

 Reverse: VICTORIA AVG, Victory walking left, wreath in right hand, palm frond in left

Philip I came to power after rousing the Roman army against Emperor Gordian III and perhaps causing his death. In A.D. 248, he threw a huge festival for the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of the city of Rome – a grand spectacle including theatrical productions throughout the city, gladiator fights at the Colosseum, sacrifices of exotic animals to deities, and other lavish observances.
