To: All Commanders and Chiefs of Staff There exists a real danger that our friend Rommel is becoming a kind of magician or bogey-man to our troops, who are talking far too much about him. He is by no means a superman, although he is undoubtedly very energetic and able. Even if he were a superman, it would still be highly undesirable that our men should credit him with supernatural powers. General C. Auchinleck British Army Commander-in-Chief in the Middle East.
The story of Rommel, the famous German Field Marshal of World War II, commonly known as Desert Fox.
[Brigadier Desmond Young] served with distinction in two world wars. He was wounded in the first liquid-fire attack at Ypres in 1915, winning a Military Cross. He was a battalion commander before he was twenty-five. In World War II, he served in Abyssinia, Syria and the western desert. He was twice captured and twice escaped. Between the wars he ran a salvage company and then became a journalist in South Africa and India.
