This is a species of flowering plant in the genus Hibiscus that is native to Africa but has spread to the West Indies and Asia. The dried cranberry-tasting calyces are commonly steeped to make a popular infusion known as Carcade, or Hibiscus Tea as well as in jams & preserves and in herbal medicine (the seeds are a good source of lipid-soluble antioxidants)
