MARKINGS: ROYAL COPENHAGEN CROWN LOGO DENMARK UNDERNEATH THREE BLUE WAVES AND ARTIST INITIALS Since 1775, every piece of porcelain that has left Royal Copenhagen carries its factory marks; the three waves, the royal crown and the painter's mark. These are symbols of authenticity, the royal connection and the mark of handcraftsmanship. When the Dowager Queen Juliane Marie founded the Royal Porcelain Factory in 1775, she insisted that the three waves should be the factory's trademark. The waves symbolise Denmark's three most important bodies of water; the Sound, the Great Belt and the Little Belt. To this day, the waves are painted on the back of each piece of porcelain and comprise Royal Copenhagen's well-known signature of authenticity, a mark of fine craftsmanship and Danish porcelain art. The crown symbolises Royal Copenhagen's beginnings in the hands of the entrepreneurial monarchy. The crown was initially painted by hand, but by the 1870's, the company began to stamp the mark under the glaze. The crown is decorated with the "Dagmar Cross", a jewelled crucifix dating from the Middle Ages that was discovered in 1690. Since 1935 Royal Copenhagen porcelain has been marked to allow production year identification. In the 1935 - 1949 period, a production year was indicated by a dot above a selected letter in the ROYAL COPENHAGEN in the logo. In the 1950 - 1984 period, a production year was indicated by a dot under a selected letter in the ROYAL COPENHAGEN DENMARK inscription. In the period starting from 1985, a production date was indicated by a dot above two letters in ROYAL or under COPENHAGEN inscription. It takes four years to learn the craft of painting on Royal Copenhagen porcelain. And although it may be difficult for a layperson to distinguish one Blue Fluted Plain design from another, accomplished painters always know their own work, as they know their own personal handwriting. Each painter had (and still has) their own stamp, marked on the bottom of every piece of porcelain. Some of the painters are well-known, but some are now a mystery. ERIK NIELSEN (1887-1926): For 40 years (1887-1926), Erik Nielsen worked for the Royal Copenhagen Factory. Erik Nielsen was head of the model department, and worked also as a sculptor. He created a series of animal figures with underglaze.
PIGS BY ROYAL COPENHAGEN: Royal Copenhagen animal figurines are world famous and those figurines of pigs have become most loved. They are also rare and very hard to find. The round shapes of the pig symbolises fertility, pregnancy, wealth and abundance. Often the pig has been used as a symbol of good luck. It is said that a pig is the animal closest to the human body and specially to the human brain. The sweet pig figurines from Royal Copenhagen are good to decorate your home or as a gift to wish good luck a dear friend.
ROYAL COPENHAGEN (1775-present): Founded in 1775 by Frantz Heinrich Muller (1738-1820), Royal Copenhagen has supplied homes in Denmark and Internationally with art and design of the highest quality. The Royal Copenhagen manufactory's operations began in a converted post office in 1775. It was founded by chemist Frantz Heinrich Müller who was given a 50-year monopoly to create porcelain. Though royal patronage was not at first official, the first pieces manufactured were dining services for the royal family. In 2012 Royal Copenhagen was bought by the Finnish listed company Fiskars which was founded even earlier in 1649. The company now produces its products in Thailand.
