IN THIS SCENE MR PICKWICK IS NONCHALANTLY STRIDING AND GLACING AT THE LADY ON THE UPSTAIRS BALCONY.
IT WAS DESIGNED BY CHARLES NOKE IN THE LATE 1930S AND MANUFACTURED FROM 1940 THROUGH 1960. THE D NUMBER INDICATES THIS PLATE WAS MADE IN 1952.
THIS LOVELY DICKENS WARE DISH, WHICH WAS DESIGNED BY CHARLES NOKE, IS SQUARISH IN SHAPE AND FEATURES 'MR. PICKWICK', A CHARACTER FROM THE NOVEL, 'THE PICKWICK PAPERS', BY CHARLES DICKENS.
PICKWICK IS A RETIRED SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN AND IS THE FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN OF THE PICKWICK CLUB A CLUB FORMED TO EXPLORE PLACES REMOTE FROM LONDON AND INVESTIGATE THE QUAINT AND CURIOUS PHENOMENA OF LIFE FOUND THERE. MR. PICKWICK WAS KNOWN AS THE IMMORTAL, EVER YOUNG, INTENSELY STUBBORN, YET WITH A ROMANTIC HEART, GOOD-NATURED GENTLEMAN.
THE DISH HAS 'NOKES' SIGNATURE ON THE FRONT AND THE ROYAL DOULTON BACK-STAMP AND PATTERN NUMBER D6329 ON THE BACK.
OTHER THAN SOME MINOR CRAZING, IT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND MEASURES 14CM X 14CM.
MARKINGS: DISTINGUISHABLE ROYAL DOULTON TRADEMARK LOGO WITH THE FAMOUS INTERLOCKING DS, THE CROWN, THE LION, AND THE ROUNDEL. USED FROM 1930S ONWARDS. IT ALSO HAS THE SPECIAL DICKENSWARE LOGO AND A D6329 NUMBER. THIS D NUMBER DATES FROM 1952.
SIZE: 14CM SQUARE
CONDITION: IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. NO CHIPS. NO CRACKS.
CHARLES NOKES (1858-1941): For collectors of Royal Doulton, Charles Noke is a well known name having designed some of the most famous and iconic Doulton seriesware for Doulton from the 1920s to 1940. In 1899 the Doulton studio recruited a young designer by the name of Charles Noke. He is now regarded as the brainchild behind Royal Doulton seriesware a range of products were standard blank pottery shapes (everything from plates to jugs, bowls to vases and teapots) could be decorated with a consistent theme. Charles John Noke became the senior designer and modeller for Royal Doulton from 1889.
DICKENS WARE (1937-1948): In 1908, Royal Doulton introduced the Dickens Ware series based on Charles Dickens characters, which was originally produced in 1937. A second run of the series was produced mid-century until 1948. Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. The Pickwick Papers 1837, was the first novel by Charles Dickens. Pickwick and his three companions (Mr. Winkle, Mr. Snodgrass and Mr. Tupman) travel around the country. The Pickwick Papers exalts the joys of travel, the pleasures of eating and drinking well, fellowship between men, innocence, benevolence, youthfulness and romance.
