THE 'UNDER THE GREENWOOD TREE' PLATE FEATURES A COLORFUL SCENE OF THE LEGENDARY ENGLISH OUTLAW ROBIN HOOD (THE KING OF ARCHERS) AND A TRAVELLER THAT ROBIN IS ASSISTING WITH A COUPLE OF COINS. THE SCENE IS EXTRACTED FROM A PAINTING BY WE GRACE.

THE UNDER THE GREENWOOD TREE SERIES WAS ISSUED BETWEEN 1914 AND 1967 BUT THE D NUMBER ON OUR BACKSTAMP DATES OUR DISH FROM 1952.
 
ROYAL DOULTON SERIESWARE:
Charles Noke, Royal Doulton's original art director, created ideas for the launch of Royal Doulton's Seriesware range at the end of the 19th century. The inspiration for many of the patterns featured characters from literature, history, folklore and music.
Some of the most identifiable Doulton Seriesware includes patterns such as Coaching Days, Dickensware, Shakespearean, Under the Greenwood Tree (Robin Hood), Blue Children, Gaffers and the Professionals series.
The Under the Greenwood Tree series showcased 17 unique Robin Hood-themed scenes on more than 60 different items, including toothpick holders, vases, jugs, fruit dishes, cake plates, bon bon dishes, and more. The series first began in 1914, and production ran through 1967.
 
ROYAL DOULTON:
In 1899 the Doulton studio recruited a young designer by the name of Charles Noke.
He is now regarded as the brainchild behind Royal Doulton seriesware, a range of products were standard blank pottery shapes (everything from plates to jugs, bowls to vases and teapots) could be decorated with a consistent theme.
Production continued at the Lambeth factory until 1956, after which Doulton concentrated on their activities at Burslem.
It has a 'family' of English brands, having merged with Minton in 1968, and gaining Royal Albert from the merger with AEP in 1971. And, in 2005, these historic names became part of the Waterford Wedgwood group.
It is now part of WWRD Holdings Ltd. the name being an acronym for the main components of the business: Waterford Chrystal, Wedgwood and Royal Doulton
 
MARKINGS: DISTINGUISHABLE ROYAL DOULTON TRADEMARK LOGO IN BROWN WITH THE FAMOUS INTERLOCKING DS, THE CROWN, THE LION, AND THE ROUNDEL. USED FROM 1930S ONWARDS.
 
ROYAL DOULTON MADE IN ENGLAND UNDER THE GREENWOOD TREE D6341 ALSO 8051A IN GREEN.
 
Early 1930s to 1950s trademarks often include the capital letter "A" next to the crown and lion. Later pieces include, underneath the Royal Doulton stamp, the character name and number followed underneath by a "D" number, and lower still, a sequence of registration numbers.

Since our dish features a D number it dates from 1952.
