Daniel Defoe [1660-1731] wrote of a man that was shipwrecked, alone on a deserted island. This man was named Robinson Crusoe and was based on the sailor named Alexander Selkirk, a  Scotsman who lived on a uninhabited island, Juan Fernandez, for almost 5 years.  Robinson Crusoe appears wearing a brown hat and light red wrap. His beard is long and flowing and his handle is a palm tree behind which Friday - his island companion - looks about.
