| Notes: | Marthinus Wessel Pretorius founded the city of Pretoria in 1855. He named the city after his father Andries Wilhelmus Jacobus Pretorius, the Voortrekker leader best remembered for his defeat of the Zulus at the Battle of Blood River in 1838. Dirk Van der Hoff was a minister born in the Netherlands. He established the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk in the Transvaal which became the official state church of the Z.A. Republic in 1857. |
