In 2004 the Post Office initiated field trials on what was described as "Virtual Stamps" Blank labels were issued to post offices and the value which could run from 1c to R5000 was appended by a¿printer at the post office counter. This experiment was undertaken at ONLY FOUR post offices in South Africa.¿(Bryanston, Johannesburg International Airport, Kempton Park & Menlyn in Pretoria.)
Trials continued until post offices ran out of stock. "Virtual Stamps" were not made available to collectors through normal channels and could only be obtained from post offices using the system.¿
A strip of three 20c values (mint)¿was recently sold¿for an amount in excess of R2000.00¿/ This information is verifiable. The item was listed by the auctioneer (A highly respected international auctioneer)¿as "very rare". Mint quantities that exist are low and this stamp may turn out to be much scarcer than the 1987 40c "Bible" stamp. THIS ITEM IS AN UNPRINTED STRIP OF THREE STAMPS. - IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DESTROYED BY POST OFFICE STAFF BUT WAS MISTAKENLY HANDED TO THE CUSTOMER WITH A STRIP OF STAMPS PURCHASED AT THE TIME.
