Genre: Fiction

An epic four hundred and fifty pages of adventure in Africa in the years immediately after World War One. Two larger than life central characters, who do not realise they are larger than life, meet and become friends. One owns vast tracts of land in which he is virtually king and the other has ambitions to do the same. They keep the peace, hunt the wild animals for profit and to protect their people, and indulge their large sensual appetites for food, alcohol, tobacco and both white and black women, who are to all intents and purposes slave girls. They even take a trip to find some slaves of their own. But while they are following their own ambitions the world around them is changing and they have to respond to it or lose everything they have worked to achieve.
The story is rivetting and the characters are interesting and surprisingly believable. The attitudes of the time in which it is set are reflected in their behaviour towards the wildlife and the native populations they encounter, which is to be expected for the sake of autheticity.
The book was a New York Times bestseller when it was first published in the 1960's, and the author was compared to Hemingway and Harold Robbins. I have only ever been able to find three books by him, including this one, all now out of print. The only way anyone interested will get one is second hand, but it can be found online. It was described as "probably the finest book ever written about White Hunters in the African bush". A fast-paced and thoroughly enjoyable, old-fashioned adventure story by a very talented author.

Book condition: Very Good – Slight signs of wear. Hardly shelf worn and slight  bumped corners. No dog eared pages and no creases on the cover. No missing pages, no writing in the book. Pages on the inside of the book are still in a very good condition.

Please note:

I have 1000's of books available.

If you are looking for something specific, please feel free to ask and I will let you know if I have it.

I WILL COMBINE ORDERS FOR POSTAGE/COURIER.
