A beautifully hand-painted Russian lacquer box depicting the fairytale scene Vasilisa the Beautiful. The painting is rich with colour, fine detailing, and layered shading typical of high-quality lacquer work. The box has an oval form with a gently domed lid and a deep red lacquer interior. The surface displays traditional gilded floral borders which frame the central artwork.
The box is signed Khokhlov along the lower border of the scene. This surname is associated with trained lacquer miniature painters from major Russian workshops.
The style, use of mother-of-pearl iridescence and depth of colour are consistent with Fedoskino production.
The inscription reads meaning Vasilisa the Beautiful, one of Russias most beloved folk tales.
The painting on the lid is clear and vibrant. There are a few cracks (not chipped) to image only visable close up.The box shows age-related surface wear and minor rubbing to the black lacquer base. The hinge area shows some light wear consistent with use. Interior lacquer is clean and glossy. There is a knock to the underside of lid and base.Has been touched up so not noticeable.
