Residents of Polkhovsky Maidan and surrounding villages began to paint matryoshkas as far back as in the beginning of 20th century.

Now matryoshka of Maidan is produced by more than 700 woodworkers and artists.

The main features of Maidan matryoshkas are black lines around patterns, bright aniline dyes, old lacquering technology.

This matryoshka was made by Maidan masters in non classical style but using old technology.

Painted matryoshka of Maidan is not only a traditional Russian souvenir, but also a good educational toy for children.

The highest doll is 12.5cm in height.
