South African Air Force Pilots Flying Log Book named to 205680V I.C.Maxfield, from his Pilot training starting in August 1941 at No. 2 Air School, Randfontein, to No. 5 Air School, Witbank, to No. 23 Air School, qualified as a Pilot on 27th February 1942, flying an Anson. Passed as First Pilot on Oxford at No. 45 Air School, Oudtshoorn, on to lots of interal flights around South Africa as well as training flights. On 25th March 1944 he leaves on board Dakota # 6810 to Bulawayo - Kasama - Ndolo - Lusaka - Tabora - Juba - Malakal - Wadi Seidna - Wadi Halfa and on to Almaza, arriving on the 29th March. Next certified to fly a Marauder on 26th June 1944. 14th August flies by Dakota from Paynfield to Benghazi - Bari - Naples - Rome - Pescara, arriving on 19th August 1944, and posted to SAAF 12 Squadron the same day. Next entry, 23rd August, is a bombing raid on Imoila marshalling yards, his 1st raid, received some ack ack fire, then nearly daily - sometime twice a day - he flies raids on various towns, strong points, gun positions, etc. 6th raid "A/C holed a few times, rear gunner received face wound", 13th raid "Slight ack ack fire, a/c holed", 16th raid "Ack ack fire fairly accurate", 21st raid "Target: Road bridge SW of Revonna, bombs straddle road, no hits on bridge", 15th October "Pescara to Iesi, not a very pleasant trip, a/c did not feel safe, had to make emergency landing at Pescara after first take off", 23rd raid "Target: marshalling yard at trieste, had to turn back due to engine failure. No bombs dropped.", 26th raid "Target: Marshalling yards at Udini. First tried target at Yugoslavia but covered in cloud. Bombs straddled M.Y. (Marshalling Yards), fairly heavy ack ack fire, a/c received two holes", up to his 27th raid on 31st December 1944, "Target: Enemy stores at Castel Franco. Abortive, no bombs dropped", book almost full, just a couple of pages open.
Some water damage to covers, two pages loose, one page torn out - missing, five pages with some wax crayon scribbling, see attached photos.

The South African Post Office does not insure parcels to all countries and only registers items up to a certain size and weight.
There is a maximum Insured amount for each country, please check with me if you want to find out the maximum for your country.
If a parcel is lost the Post Office will only pay out for Insured items, but does not cover the postage, just the declared value of the parcel.
