Carl Büchner, born in Somerset East, was a renowned South African artist who studied History of Art at the University of the Witwatersrand and Fine Art at the Witwatersrand Technical College School of Arts and Crafts under Eric Byrd and Maurice van Essche. After qualifying as a teacher, he began his career at the Pretoria Art Centre alongside influential figures like Walter Battiss and Le Roux Smith Le Roux. Büchner went on to teach at several Transvaal schools and later worked as an Art Inspector for the Cape Education Department in Grahamstown. He also served as Principal of the Stellenbosch Art Centre and lectured at the Michaelis School of Fine Art. A Trustee of the South African National Gallery for many years, Büchner contributed to the art world as an art critic for Die Burger and The Cape Times. His work was widely exhibited, including at the 1956 and 1960 Quadrennial Exhibitions, the 1982 Cape Town Triennial, and the 1963 São Paulo Biennale. Büchner won the prestigious Artists of Fame & Promise competition in 1963 and retired from teaching in 1970 to pursue a full-time career as an artist. He painted until his death in 2003. Büchners art, marked by a focus on the human figure, often featured elongated forms distorted in an expressionistic style. His early works were characterized by textured surfaces created with a palette knife, while later paintings incorporated modulated brushstrokes, likely influenced by the Italian contemporary art movement he encountered during a European tour in the late 1950's. His style and themes bear a close connection to those of his mentor, Maurice van Essche. Büchner's work is housed in many public collections throughout South Africa.
