SA Made (Kimberly Engineering Works) 1968 40mm Bofors Brass Shell Casing

The Bofors 40mm gun, often referred to simply as the Bofors gun, is an anti-aircraft autocannon designed in the 1930s by the Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors (Now part of British Arms Manufacturer BAE Systems). It was one of the most popular medium-weight anti-aircraft systems during World War II, used by most of the western Allies as well some captured systems being used by the Axis powers. A small number of these weapons remain in service to this day, and saw action as late as the Persian Gulf War.

MARKINGS:
A) 40MM MK4
This is the weapon caliber size. It denotes that the shell was manufactured for the globally famous Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft autocannon.
The Bofors 40mm Mk4 is a lightweight, fully digitised, multi-purpose naval gun system originally designed in 1932 in Sweden and later manufactured by the British BAE Systems Bofors AB. It serves as a close-in defense and tactical weapon against anti-ship missiles, drones, aircraft, sea vessels, and shore targets.
B) BROAD ARROW - BRITISH MILITARY ACCEPTANCE / PROPERTY MARK
c) KE - This is the manufacturer's facility code. In military ordnance it stands for the Kimberley Engineering Works (based in Kimberley, South Africa). During the mid-to-late 20th century, South African defense contractors utilized this code for medium and large-calibre brass artillery casings.
d) LOT 144 - Lot number for that year
e) 2/68 - DATE OF PRODUCTION Feb 1968
By 1968, the Bofors 40mm system was the staple light anti-aircraft gun for both ground forces and naval vessels around the world, including the South African military.

SIZE: THE CASE IS 40MM IN DIAMETER AT THE OPEN END AND 60MM DIAMETERS AT BASE WITH A TOTAL LENGTH OF 310MM.
WEIGHT OF CASING: 809G

The Bofors 40mm Mk4 is a lightweight, fully digitised, multi-purpose naval gun system designed in 1932 and manufactured by the Swedish BAE Systems Bofors AB. It serves as a close-in defense and tactical weapon against anti-ship missiles, drones, aircraft, sea vessels, and shore targets.

BAE Systems also adapted the core 40 Mk4 naval gun into a truck-mounted ground system called the Tridon Mk2, designed specifically for highly mobile counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) and point-defense air defense roles
