Hallmarked Sterling Silver Medal #43 of 60 medals
The Battle of Spion Kop (Afrikaans: Slag van Spioenkop) was fought about 38 km west-south-west of Ladysmith on the hilltop of Spioenkop along the Tugela River, Natal. The battle was fought between the independent South African Republic and British forces from 23-24 January 1900 as part of the Second Boer War, and resulted in a famous British defeat.
This collection of sixty medals sold in 2014 for exactly R29 000 on Bid-or-Buy, which works out at just over R480.00 per medal.
Because people collect different themes of South Africa’s history, I have decided to break up the collection and sell the items separately.
Each medal was minted in Sterling Silver (92.5% pure silver) and coated in 24 carat gold, is 45 mm in diameter and weighs approx. 40 grams.
Please see following pictures of the medal you are bidding on: BATTLE OF SPION KOP (1900). The reverse of the medal is a generic picture.
I have NEVER seen more beautiful toning than this on any coin or medal before. It is SIMPLY SUPERB.
