SA Mint : Coin Set struck for 1995 Royal Visit with RARE Gold Sovereign
Enquiries at the SA MINT could not determine how many sets were struck, but the general consensus is that it was only a few.
The set consists of a SA Penny and SA Half Penny of 1960 in Brilliant UNC condition, a SA two-shilling of 1952, a Crown of 1960 and two Commemorative Crowns struck in Proof Condition with the wording "Queen Elizabeth II Royal Visit to South Africa 1947-1995". Lastly, a gold Sovereign is also included.
Is this the Republic of South Africa's RAREST GOLD COIN?
The 1995 SA Mint-marked Gold Sovereign is not recorded by Hern, but officially struck by the South African Mint for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to South Africa in 1995.
According to a discussion a few years back on the BidorBuy coin forum, only a handful is known. It was struck in 22 carat gold and weighs 7.988 grams.
Please see the following pictures and note the official SA Mint-mark (SA) to the right of the date on the reverse. (The outside of the box show some age marks but all the coins are pristine and encapsulated)
