An intersting piece of history. I found this horn some years ago in the Baviaans Kloof area of the Eastern Cape. I cannot say for sure but in my experience this is an old decorated powder horn used for muzzle loaders. Perhaps Griqua? or Boers. It appears to have white cow horn round the wide end and is pegged in with neat little wooden pegs and carved motif neatly inset into the end. A metal U piece is inserted into this side. The stopper is made from bone and a dark hard wood maybe stinkwood. This piece is joined onto the horn with turned wood? and fixed with little dark wood pegs. There is the remains of a neatly plaited skin cord which has broken off. It seems to have been attached to the stopper. It is in really condition for its age.
