DESCRIPTION | A very nice aluminium craftwork cigarette case from a South African Prisoner of War interned in PRIGIONE DU GUERRA CAMP 54 in Italy during WWII. According to the inscription in the case the prisoner's name was B Steyn and he was taken prisoner at TOBRUK. The cigarette case has extensive deep engraving on the outside (both front and back) and measures 14 x 8.5 x 1.4 cm. It is hinged and has an opening clip. On the inside there is an engraved frame on both sides and the P O W's name, the camp where he was held and the place of his capture are roughly scratched out. You can see the front of the case and the wording scratched out on the inside of the case on the image above and the item is further illustrated through 5 images which follow. CONDITION | The cigarette case is in excellent condition. It even still has the elastic bands which holds the cigarettes in place inside. |
A very nice and scarce collectable piece of memorabilia from the South African soldiers held prisoner of war in Italy during WWII. The PG 54 Internment Camp was the camp to which most South African soldiers captured in Libya were sent. These cigarette cases were made by prisoners of war from aluminium obtained from the fuselage of aeroplanes or from food dixies. |
