For sale is a near-complete set (196 issues) of 41 years of the magazine SA RAIL, from April 1971 to May 2010. There are just 3 missing issues viz: June 1979, Nov/Dec 1994, & Apr/July 2000. The condition of virtually all the magazines is very good although some of the earlier mags (around 1972), which were printed on not-so-good paper with flimsy covers have suffered a bit. (But are fully intact).

This magazine has been an absolute treasure-trove of information, photographs, articles and discussions on the SAR and its later restructurings. Substantial contributions over the years have been made by the likes of Frank Holland, AE Durrant, Les Pivnic, Jim Barrow, Nathan Berelowitz, George Pattison, Richard Clatworthy, Charlie Lewis, Eugene Armer,  Roger Perry, John Gilberthorpe, Alan Clarke, Alec Watson, and very many others.

As an example, in the issue for February 1972, Alec Watson gives a list of the 51 named engines at De Aar and, in the December 1972 issue, the prodigious contributor John Gilberthorpe (then a fireman) describes - in great detail & over 27 pages! - how he, during his 20 day’s leave, did a lightning tour around the country, calling at over 110 steam sheds & sub-sheds. His article lists the classes and numbers of locos – and other details - in each shed.

The lot of 196 issues has a mass of approx. 23kg and the Domestic Parcel cost (in RSA, and to be confirmed) will be about R135. Thus it may be convenient for the successful bidder to arrange collection in the W.Cape Garden Route area.

NB: This offer covers the period April 1971 to May 2010 only - Not any earlier issues that may have been Published.
