FULL DESCRIPTION

This item is a balkie (beret bar flash) of the South African Defence Force (SADF) Commandos. The design features a green-saffron-green layout and is a recognised item of South African military insignia from the Border War era.

This example belongs to the SADF Commando Corps, which formed the rural, local part-time units within the defence structure. The pattern shown is identified as the larger 2nd pattern of the commando beret bar. A smaller 1st pattern also existed.

The flash was worn as a metal and enamel bar on the dark green beret of SADF Commandos.
