The Port Elizabeth Commando [Afr: Port Elizabeth-Kommando] was formally established as a Rifle Commando at Port Elizabeth on 16 Dec 1948, although it has a history dating back to the creation of Rifle Clubs after the Ango Boer War, after the British closed down all the old Boer commandos. After 1912 Rifle Associations were formed as part of the UDF, but the PE one did not take part in either World War. Soon after the UDF became the SADF in 1957, the Rifle Commandos all became Commandos. Although the Commando served in the SWA Operational Area and had deployed elements during Operations Savannah (1975/76), Protea (1981) and Modular (1987), it also had a responsibiltiy for the local security of the area under the Group 6 HQ in Southdene, Port Elizabeth, as part of the Eastern Province Command. It was disbanded in the period 1 Apr 2005 to 31 Mar 2006 after President Mbeki announced the disbanding of the commando system in 2003.
