Commemorative 44 Parachute Regiment challenge coin with airborne eagle and parachute insignia. Collectable South African airborne memorabilia.
This item is a 44 Parachute Regiment / Brigade commemorative challenge coin, sometimes referred to as a tupper flash, produced as a collectors item rather than legal tender. It features the official airborne insignia showing an eagle with spread wings above an open parachute canopy.
The insignia belongs to 44 Parachute Brigade, later reorganised as 44 Parachute Regiment, a major airborne formation of the South African Defence Force (SADF) during the Border War. The unit subsequently continued within the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and has long been associated with airborne operations.
These medallions were typically produced privately or internally to build esprit de corps, commemorate service, or mark particular duties and achievements. The unit was primarily based in Tempe, Bloemfontein.
