Commemorative 6 SAI Battalion challenge coin featuring the Strelitzia insignia. Collectable South African infantry memorabilia.
This item is a 6th South African Infantry Battalion (6 SAI BN) commemorative challenge coin / tupper flash. It is not legal tender, but an unofficial collectors piece produced for unit pride rather than formal currency.
The design displays the battalion insignia with the Strelitzia flower (bird of paradise), which is one of the recognisable heraldic symbols of the unit. Such items were often privately produced by service members as remembrance pieces.
6 SAI was established on 1 January 1962, originally based in Grahamstown (now Makhanda), Eastern Cape. The battalion served as part of the South African Defence Force (SADF) during the Border War and later became an air assault infantry unit within the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
