This item is a South African Infantry (SAI) cap or beret badge, commonly known as a Bokkop. The badge shows the head of a springbok antelope with the letters S.A.I. on the base, identifying the wearer as part of the South African Infantry Corps.
This metal versionusually brass or gilding metalwas standard issue for SADF infantry members and was worn either on the beret or as part of a formal dress uniform.
Various patterns of the Bokkop existed throughout different periods, including WW1, post-1953 versions, and the Border War era. The one shown here aligns with the later SADF period commonly collected today.
