The Grootfontein Commando was established as a commando unit at Grootfontein in 1957 when the local rifle commando was converted into a full commando unit. It formed part of Sector 30 in the then South West Africa Command. When the South West Africa Territory Force (SWATF) was formed in August 1980, the commando became the Grootfontein Area Force Unit.
