A 20 MW pool-type research reactor in South Africa, SAFARI-1 was commissioned in 1965 and is operated by the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA). Initially running on highly enriched uranium, it converted to low-enriched fuel in 2009. It produces medical and industrial radioisotopes, supports materials science research, and operates about 300 days per year.
