Sailing Ships by Moonlight. 19th century oil on board, signed. Possibly Spanish or American.

Painting is 44 x 40 cm. Frame is 60 x 57 c.m. Ornate frame is of the period.

Clearly a very early 19th century painting. The painting is signed but I cannot read the signature. May be "Cavil " or "Covil ".

The style of the painting and the sailing ships as well as  the early steamship seems to indicate a period in the 1860s.

The sailing ship in the distance is flying the yellow and red Spanish Civil Ensign flag, in use from the 1840s.

The large sailing ship in the middle is flying a red pennant.

This would seem to indicate a Spanish scene. However , the style of the painting is also strongly reminiscent of a number of American painters, so maybe the artist is from the Americas.

In any event, the detail of the ships including the lines and the small figures shows a careful skilled hand at work here.
