Salifert Nitrate Test Kit (NO3)

Although Nitrates are a lot less toxic to aquarium livestock than Ammonia or Nitrites, elevated levels will eventually cause livestock fatalities. Levels of up to 20 mg/l can negatively affect certain animals especially in a marine system. Most freshwater fish will be safe at levels up to 50mg/l and some can even cope with much higher amounts. It needs to be remembered however that increasing Nitrate levels will eventually impact the fishs immune system and illness and death will follow. Nitrates in the water will also cause a proliferation of algae which is unsightly at best.
