Description:
Hardy or half-hardy annual, or may persist as a short-lived perennial. Erect, branching, rather slender growth habit. Flowers are often red or pink but may be in a variety of bright colours, often with contrasting bold veining on the petals. Long flowering season from summer to autumn.

Cultivation:
Fertile, but well drained soil in full sun. Root-rot can be a problem in damp conditions.

Propagation:
Seed started indoors in early spring, sown on surface of fertile, well-draining soil, 18-24C; set out 6 weeks later. May also be sown directly outdoors in late spring. Needs dark for germination, which is irregular. Grow in full sun. May also be sown in fall to be grown as an indoor plant, during winter.

Cottage garden or border.
