Saluut the SAPPERS - Neil ORPEN and H.J. MARTIN
FOREWORD
Salute the Sappers is the history of the south African Engineer Corps and deals mainly with events of the World War 11. The story of the corps is told in two parts, of which this is the first (forming Volume V111 of series "South African Forces, World War 11"), while Part 11 (forming Volume 1X) is to be published in 1982.
The loyalty and enthusiasm of the Sappers in World War 11 spurred them to give of their best from the first shot fired to the last. Unlike others in the South African army, the engineers remained in the field from the day they arrived in East Africa in 1940 until the day the enemy capitulated in Europe.
"Your record of engineering achievement in war is unsurpassed, and the Corps of Royal Engineers is proud to have been associated with you in it. In technique and equipment you have often given a lead which we have gladly and confidently followed." .......
