This item is an authentic South African Military Health Service (SAMHS) or former South African Medical Service (SAMS) doctors cloth badge. It displays the Rod of Asclepius a single serpent wrapped around a staff the internationally recognised symbol of medicine and healing. The maroon colour is the traditional colour used for military medical services.
This badge originates from South Africa and was used from the apartheid-era SAMS period (19791994) through to the post-1994 SAMHS era, where the design remains in use as part of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). This version appears to be a cloth badge meant for wear on a uniform.
