Many Christians are confused about sanctification. On the one hand, there are those whose position is summarized by the phrase, "Let go and let God." On the other hand, there are those who believe that justification is by grace, but sanctification is by works. This book will help members of both groups discover the truth about sanctification. The Bible teaches that salvation, from start to finish, from election to glorification, is all of grace. The great hymn writer, Augustus Toplady, expressed the Christian view of salvation when he wrote the words: "But not for works which we have done/Or shall hereafter do/Hath God decreed on sinful man/Salvation to bestow." Our works, neither before nor after regeneration, are the basis of our salvation. We are justified declared legally righteous by God and pardoned from all sin - by grace through faith, apart from works. Our justification is wholly outside of us; it is a work that God has done for us by imputing Christ's perfect righteousness to our account. Sanctification, however, is not done outside of us. It is a subjective moral change in our character that begins with regeneration and ends with our glorification in heaven. It is the effect of our justification through faith. God sanctifies us through knowledge. Christ prayed, "Sanctify them by your truth; your word is truth," Peter prayed that "grace and peace by multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord." That is why this book emphasizes Bible study. God sanctifies his people through his Word. Unless we know that Word, we cannot be sanctified.
