Andr P. Brink's first post-apartheid novel, Sandkastele (1995), offers a reimagined history of South Africa through a postcolonial, feminist re-visioning of a male-dominated, colonising official history. The text offers an alternative family history created through a cyclical frame narrative and the imbedded narratives of the character ouma Kristina. These narratives are framed by her grandaughter Kristien's interpretation and editorialising of the stories of the past. The structure of Sandkastele is reminiscent of the frame narratives in Thousand and One Arabian Nights, activating a rich network of transtextual references. Sandkastele's labyrinthine narrative structure undermines the chronology of past, present and future in favour of a strategy that explores history as a web of associative, textual possibilities. Reworking history is a theme that occurs in other texts in the Brink prose oeuvre and necessitates an exploratory reading method to plumb concepts of remembrance and revisioning history central to Sandkastele.
