This design, derived from a civilian model available in the 1960s, remained largely unchanged until 1972, introducing the notable 'smudge' and 'pinwheel' shapes, which led to its nickname as the 'pinwheel pattern.' By the early 1980s, the SAP transitioned to the more recognizable second pattern camouflage, and original first pattern uniforms nearly vanished by the 1990s.
