The South African Police (SAP) adopted its distinctive camouflage pattern in 1969, featuring grass green and russet foliage on a khaki background. This design, derived from a civilian model available in the 1960s, remained largely unchanged until 1972, introducing the notable 'smudge' and 'pinwheel' shapes, which led to its nickname as the 'pinwheel pattern.' By the early 1980s, the SAP transitioned to the more recognizable second pattern camouflage, and original first pattern uniforms nearly vanished by the 1990s. Today, items in the original SAP first pattern camouflage are exceptionally rare and highly sought after by collectors. ### Historical Significance: The first SAP camouflage represents a significant era in South African policing and military history, especially during the Border War, making it invaluable for enthusiasts. The design underwent significant changes starting in 1973, losing the 'smudge' and 'pinwheel' features but retaining the foliage shapes. The second pattern camouflage was used by elite units like the Special Task Force and Riot Control Units in the early 1980s, providing superior concealment in diverse environments. Both chest webbings, not standard issue, were replicated by a member of a Riot Control Unit in Middelburg during 1984/85. ### Chest Webbings can accommodate: - 4 x R4/5 / AR 15 25/30/45 round magazines - 2 x 9MM 17 round magazines - 1 x 9mm pistol - 1 x flashlight or additional magazine pouch For collectors, this combo is an unbeatable opportunity to own items from different periods, making your collection truly unique. Dont miss out!
