Pretorius states on his attestation form that he had been in the Police Force for 5 Years and 7 Months at the time he enlisted into the Union Defence Force.
He was to serve for only just over 2 months. He was discharged on the 30/08/1940 from the Union Forces on medical grounds and was to resume Civil duties with the SA Police. Nothing further could be found with regards to his SA Police career however, he was promoted to 2nd class Sergeant at some point as his Police good service medal is named to him as 2nd class Sergeant.

He was also awarded the Royal Life Saving Society medal in Bronze. It is engraved on the reverse, “Awarded to H.S Pretorius, Feb 1935”.
