This is a 2nd type Operator badge.
These badges were never officially numbered. Only the 1st type badges were numbered.
Only the 1st type badges were officially issued with a number. The 2nd type badges were initially not issued with numbers. If a 2nd (or 3rd) type is found with a number, check the type of numbering. It will be engraved (privately done) and not a stamped number. Not all current operator`s have numbered badges like SA Special Forces operators. I`ve worked with numerous operators and none had numbered badges. However, apparently an operator number was allocated to the individual.
Operator badges are only awarded after serving 2 years, as an Operator in the STF. They are not issued after selection, like the SADF Special Forces Operator badge.
This Operator badge has a 3 pin construction.
The falcon always looks towards the recipients heart. These right facing peregrine falcon badges were worn on the right breast, just above the nameplate. When the SAPS introduced the current name badge, the operator badge was moved to the left breast. As a result, all new operator badges were manufactured in a mirror image, facing to the left from a viewers perspective.

The Emblem
In gold, a swooping peregrine falcon; in its claws a fork positioned over a sword pointing downward, and around it all a laurel wreath.
Symbolism
1) The sword has a dual meaning, symbolising firstly the sword of justice, as this is the police unit tasked with ensuring that justice prevails. Secondly, it symbolises the training of the Special Task Force member in combat operations on land.
2) The peregrine falcon symbolises the speed and skill of the unit’s attack on the enemy, and the capability to launch an air strike.
3) The fork is the fork of Neptune, the sea god. Special Task Force members are trained in scuba diving. It is further the responsibility of the Special Task Force to evacuate seafaring vessels during an act of piracy. It also symbolises a sea strike competency.
4) The laurel wreath symbolises the prestige of passing a rigorous selection process to be accepted as an operator in the Special Task Forces.
