The 1 st Pattern design underwent significant changes starting in 1973, losing the 'smudge' and'pinwheel' features but retaining the foliage shapes.

The second pattern camouflage was used by elite units, such as the Special Task Force and Riot Control Units, in the early 1980s, providing superior concealment in diverse environments.

SAPS chest webbings are not standard issue.
