Carbide lamps, developed in the 1890's, were fist used as carriage lamps, before they were introduced to the railways and mines. This "Crestella" carbide lamp was manufactured by the Premier Lamp Engineering Co Ltd in Leeds, but was used by the SAR, as evidenced by the stamped plate. This design was first registered in the 1920’s, but I have no idea how long these were in production or when the company ceased production in Leeds. The lamp has a treen handle that is cracked. This is clearly visible on the pictures. The rest, including the glass, is in very good condition. I believe it is silver-plated, but I am not sure of this. In places, there is a reddish shine to the metal like one finds on silver-plate when it had been cleaned over a long period to the extent that the silver begins to wear off. It is solidly made and heavy for its size. It measure 26 cm tall. Please add R48 for postage.
