About the prototype

  • Placed in service: Difficult to pinpoint exactly but between '38 & '57
  • Bogie type: Diamond Frame or Spoorbarber, depending on era.
  • Capacity: 8,050 gallons of petrol or water (SAR uses rolling stock for various purposes)
  • Vehicle numbers: Difficult to pinpoint
  • Notes: The problem with the normal XP7 was that the petrol would heat up and expand during long trips in the harsh African sun. The vehicles were covered with corrugated iron sheeting to act as an umbrella for the tank.
