The future of scale modelling is spun cast in Metal

Our new white metal bogies are far more than just a metal frame with holes to support axles. We undertook to make the best bogies on the planet (not by trial and error - but rather by scientific method) Our aim was to make the smoothest running bogie no matter the condition of the track.

The biggest contributor to poor bogie rolling performance is friction at the axle tip. This contact area should be as small and as smooth as possible.Keeping the contact area small and smooth using plastics is near impossible because plastic wears out fairly quickly.

Another factor in poor bogie performance is axle rigidity relative to the bogie side frame. Tracks are somewhat uneven and there are often gaps where track components meet i.e. points & flex-track. If the axle is unable to float within the bogie frame then the axle is driven off the rail due to its positional rigidity.

Of course we need to address weight distribution. The ideal model train has its center of gravity as low as possible. Plastic bogies negatively affect center of gravity in the following way: When light bogies are used weight has to be added to the model to force the bogies to make proper contact with the track. This additional weight is transferred to the bogie (and the wheels) through the central bogie screw. Remember that the model rests directly on the flange of the bogie screw mount. The weight transfer at this point negatively affects the ability of the bogie to rotate because of the friction at the flange.

We also found two other factors that add to poor performance:
1. Bent axles due to poor fitment.
2. Axle tip damage due to poor fitment.

We looked at many bogies from many manufacturers (including our own injection molded bogies) so as to see what can be done to remedy the situation. We also analyzed axles made by various manufacturers.

Our solution:
1. Bogie frames are cast in ductile White Metal so as to enable us to set the exact inner frame width (to keep the axle running free) This cannot be done with a plastic bogie because plastic does not retain its shape when best slightly.
2. The cone within the side frame in which the axle tip runs is parabolic in form. The exact dimensions of the parabolic form is designed geometrically in CAD and tested in many trials.
3. The axle has to have a degree of float and the float angle is taken into account during the design of the parabolic side frame axle mount cone.
4. The axle should not bend or be damaged during fitment. We developed a form suitable to mounting the axle into the bogie and the form was applied as grooves at the bottom of each side frame axle mount point. The grooves are designed to allow to axle tip to slip in easily but then to stay in place.
5. A heavy bogie forces the centre of gravity of the model to be low without the added burden of weight transfer through the bogie screw flange.
