Sarracenia oreophila, also known as the Green Pitcher Plant, is a very rare carnivorous plant in the genus Sarracenia and its native range is limited to a handful of sites in northern Alabama, North Carolina, and Georgia.
Do not, in any way, trust that old story that Sarracenia oreophila is pale or boring in coloration. They can be very colourful and strikingly veined, like Sarracenia flava with as much variation in colour.
Sarracenia oreophila sends up pitchers and flowers in early spring. The flowers are yellow to yellow-green. The pitchers last one to two months then turn shades of red and orange and finally die back. In mid summer the plants put out phyllodia: non-pitcher leaves. The phyllodia last until the next spring when new pitchers are formed.
Like other members of the genus Sarracenia, the Green Pitcher Plant traps insects using a tubular rolled leaf which collects digestive juices at the bottom.
Prey entering the tube find that their footing is made extremely uncertain by the smooth, waxy secretions found on the surfaces of the upper portion of the tube. Insects losing their footing on this surface plummet to the bottom of the tube, where a combination of digestive fluid, wetting agents and inward-pointing hairs prevent their escape and they are digested.
